Welsh filmmaker Gareth Evansâ Indonesian action crime film âThe Raidâ started off as a cult hit in 2011, but its impressive stunt-work, choreography, and high-octane thrills yielded a sequel in 2014 with âThe Raid 2 Berandal.â Both films balanced threads of police corruption and international drug-trafficking within the Jakarta criminal underbelly, boasting jaw-dropping sequences of bloody combat that have since landed both the movies atop any action aficionadoâs list of favorites. And while a third film was once in talks, Gareth Evans recently explained on the Empire Spoiler Special Podcast why itâs unlikely to happen, despite the juicy storyline he has in mind for another sequel. âI couldnât see myself going back out to make The Raid 3.â My interests had moved on to other projects,â said Evans, whoâs since directed the Netflix horror film âApostle,â and created and directed episodes for the new British crime series âGangs of London.â âYou work with other people, you meet other people and want to work with them again, you want to try different things, you find a story that suddenly captures your attention and thatâs the thing you want to do next. Things get offered to you that are hard to pass up on.â Still, Evans shared details on the ambitious, time-hopping story that wouldâve fleshed out âThe Raid 3,â which wouldâve touched on a different aspect of the Asian crime world. âThe story was going to go back in time to the moment in The Raid 2â when the Goto Gang, the Japanese gang, are having a meeting, and Goto tells his right-hand man to take care of it, wipe out every corrupt cop and politician that they have on the books and start fresh,â said Evans. âThe Raid 3â would begin with Rama coming out of that building after having killed everybody and saying No, Iâm doneâ. He walks away to [police officer] Bunawar, whoâll be waiting for him in his car, he gets in and drives away. And you stay with the Japanese gang, who are like, What the fuck do we do now? Everyoneâs dead, weâve got no-one to kill.â They get into their car, and as theyâre driving along all of a sudden this other car rocks up alongside them and just blitzes them, and the cars crash. Goto, his son, and his right-hand man are the only remaining survivors from that attack, and it cuts to credits and says The Raid 3.'â Evans said that the film would then make another leap backward in time. âThe idea was that the right-hand man, after being told to kill off all the politicians and cops and wipe the clean slate, would call back to Tokyo to the big huge boss, and be like, Gotoâs going fucking nuts. This is fucking crazy, what do I do?â The call from HQ is, Keep him still, keep him close, weâll send people to take care of it, and if you do that for us, you can take over his turf.â The attack goes wrong â itâs a kill squad from Japan who have turned up and taken out the Gotos. The original The Raid seemingly came out of nowhere in 2011, with director Gareth Evans' Indonesian thriller following an elite squads raid on a crime-infested high-rise. The team has to fight their way through a seemingly endless wave of killers, setting the scene for exhilarating â and extremely violent â fight scenes. The Raidâs lean structure and non-stop fight scenes made it an instant cult classic. Evans broadened the scope for The Raid 2 where returning hero Rama Ido Uwais goes undercover in a crime family. The sequel still featured incredible action scenes but the plot was much more complex. Evans teased he already had a concept in mind for The Raid 3 during the sequel's release, but he wanted to take a break from martial arts movies and try another genre first. Following the release of his most recent project, Netflixâs folk horror Apostle, the director cast doubt on his return to The Raid 3. During the release of The Raid 2, Evans teased a third movie would be set right before the ending of the sequel. The Raid 2 climaxes in an epic fight scene, where Rama fights his way through a wave of enemies while gang war rages offscreen. Evans eventually revealed in 2018 The Raid 3 would have started about 15 minutes prior to the end of The Raid 2, where Yakuza boss Goto orders a full-on gang war. The movie would have followed this fight from the Yakuzaâs perspective and the fallout from the battle. It also would have returned to the lean, action heavy approach of the first movie. Rama Would Have Played A Small Role In The Raid 3 In addition to being a great screen fighter, lead actor Ido Uwais Mile 22 brought a lot of heart to the part of Rama. The movies follow his journey from rookie cop to undercover gangster, who only wants to return home to his wife and child. The Raid 2 ends on an ambiguous note for the character, suggesting he could be about to die. While Evans didnât reveal the characterâs planned fate, he did say while Rama would have appeared, he would have played a small role in The Raid 3. Sadly, it appears Evans has totally lost interest in The Raid 3. He claims the project would have needed to happen shortly after The Raid 2, but starting it five years after the sequel is too late. Without Evansâ involvement, itâs doubtful a third movie will happen. Perhaps another filmmaker could revive it with Uwais returning, but there are currently no plans for The Raid 3. An American Remake Of The Raid Is Still Planned While The Raid 3 might not happen, a remake of the original might. An American remake of The Raid was planned shortly after the original proved so popular. Patrick Hughes The Expendables 3 was chosen to direct with Frank Grillo cast in a supporting role. The studio was looking to cast Chris and Liam Hemsworth as brothers in the remake, but that version eventually fell apart in 2015. It was later announced Grillo was teaming up with his The Grey director Joe Carnahan for The Raid remake, with Evans producing. Carnahanâs version will take place in Venezuela with the movie's action described as more grounded and less balletic. Grillo also claimed Uwais could potentially become involved, with the two actors working together on Beyond Skyline.
